Plurals

Most Italian nouns change their last vowel in the plural — and the article changes too.

The basic rules:

  • -o → -i: il libro → i libri
  • -a → -e: la casa → le case
  • -e → -i (masculine and feminine): il fiore → i fiori, la notte → le notti

The articles: il → i, lo / l' (m) → gli, la / l' (f) → le.

Nouns ending in an accented vowel, foreign words and shortened words don't change: la città → le città, il bar → i bar, la foto → le foto. Words in -ca / -ga add an h: l'amica → le amiche. Learn the irregular ones: l'uomo → gli uomini, l'uovo → le uova.
