c'è and ci sono (there is / there are)

c'è + one thing, ci sono + several things.

c'è (short for ci è) means there is; ci sono means there are.

  • C'è un bar qui vicino. There's a bar near here.
  • Ci sono tre camere. There are three rooms.
  • Questions: same words, rising voice: C'è un bancomat? Is there a cashpoint?
  • Negative: Non c'è latte. Non ci sono problemi.

Past: c'era / c'erano (there was / there were). Don't confuse with ecco, used to point at something: Ecco il treno! Here's the train!
