essere and avere

To be and to have: the two most important verbs, both irregular.

essere (to be) and avere (to have) are irregular. In avere the h is silent: ho sounds like o.

  • Use avere for age and for many feelings where English uses 'to be': Ho 25 anni. Ho fame, ho sete, ho freddo, ho paura.
  • Use essere di for your home town: Sono di Torino.
  • Both verbs are also helpers for the past tense: ho mangiato, sono andato.
