Congiuntivo presente: penso che sia

The subjunctive after opinions, wishes, doubts and feelings.

The congiuntivo (subjunctive) is used after expressions of opinion, doubt, wish, fear and emotion followed by che: penso che, credo che, spero che, voglio che, ho paura che, è importante che, sono contento che…

  • -are verbs take -i: che io parli; -ere / -ire verbs take -a: che io prenda, che io dorma.
  • The three singular forms are the same, so the pronoun is often added: Credo che lei abbia ragione.
  • It also follows benché / sebbene (although), affinché (so that), prima che (before), a meno che (unless).

When the subject is the same person, use di + infinitive instead: Penso di partire (I think I'll leave), but Penso che tu parta.

Irregular: essere → sia, avere → abbia, andare → vada, fare → faccia, venire → venga, potere → possa, volere → voglia, sapere → sappia, dare → dia, stare → stia.
