Condizionale and 'if' sentences

Would, could, should — and how to say 'If I had…, I would…'.

The condizionale (would) uses the same stem as the future, with the endings -ei, -esti, -ebbe, -emmo, -este, -ebbero: parlerei, sarei, avrei, vorrei, potrei.

  • Polite requests: Vorrei un caffè. Potrebbe aiutarmi?
  • Advice: Dovresti riposarti. You should rest.
  • Wishes: Mi piacerebbe vivere a Roma.

Periodo ipotetico (imaginary 'if'): se + congiuntivo imperfetto, then condizionale: Se avessi tempo, verrei. If I had time, I would come. Never put the conditional after se!

Useful congiuntivo imperfetto forms: avessi, fossi, potessi, andassi, facessi (noi: avessimo, fossimo).
