Both are past tenses, but they do different jobs.
- Passato prossimo = a completed action, an event: Ieri ho incontrato Marco.
- Imperfetto = background, description, habit, something in progress: Pioveva. Marco aspettava l'autobus.
Together, the imperfetto sets the scene and the passato prossimo says what happened: Dormivo quando è suonato il telefono. I was sleeping when the phone rang.
Clue words: ieri, una volta, all'improvviso, per due ore → passato prossimo; sempre, di solito, ogni giorno, mentre → imperfetto.
| passato prossimo | imperfetto |
|---|---|
| one completed event: Sono andato a Roma. | a habit: Andavo a Roma ogni estate. |
| a sudden action: Il telefono è suonato. | in progress: Dormivo. |
| a closed period: Ho lavorato lì per due anni. | a description: Era stanco e aveva fame. |
