The passato prossimo is the past tense of everyday speech: avere or essere + past participle.
- Regular participles: -are → -ato (parlato), -ere → -uto (venduto), -ire → -ito (dormito).
- Most verbs use avere: Ho mangiato una pizza.
- Verbs of movement or change of state (andare, venire, arrivare, partire, uscire, restare, nascere, morire…) and all reflexive verbs use essere, and the participle agrees with the subject: Marco è andato, Anna è andata, siamo andati.
Common irregular participles: fatto (fare), detto (dire), visto (vedere), preso (prendere), scritto (scrivere), letto (leggere), stato (essere), venuto (venire).
