The imperfetto describes the past as a background: habits (used to), descriptions, and actions in progress (was …-ing).
It is very regular: remove -re from the infinitive and add -vo, -vi, -va, -vamo, -vate, -vano: parlavo, prendevo, dormivo.
- Habit: Da bambino giocavo a calcio.
- Description: Era una bella giornata. Faceva caldo.
- Age and time: Avevo dieci anni. Erano le otto.
Irregular: essere (ero, eri, era, eravamo, eravate, erano), fare (facevo), dire (dicevo), bere (bevevo).
